Great Bridge Crew Club

Spring Break - 2006

Summerton, South Carolina

April 9- 15, 2006

The team’s annual spring break training camp will be held at Clemson University’s Youth Learning Institute facilities at R.M. Cooper Leadership Center in Summerton, South Carolina.  This facility is used by several NCAA Division I crew teams and high school programs.  There will be at least 3 other  teams (2 high school and 1 college teams) using the facility during the week we are training  This is an excellent opportunity for the rowers to improve their skills, come together as a team and prepare for the spring regatta season.  A week of spring break training is equivalent to a few weeks of training here in Virginia.  I strongly recommend that you visit the R.M. Cooper Leadership Center website at http://www.clemson.edu/yli/crew/cooper.htm to familiarize yourself with the facility.  There is an excellent video on the training camp on the site.

In past years we have stayed at a hotel and commuted to and from the training site.  This year is going to be different.  We are staying at the training site.  The R.M. Cooper Center is in a remote area of South Carolina.  Everything we need is on location.  This is not the “hotel” experience that we have had in the past, this is more of a training camp setting. Men and ladies will be staying in separate dorm facilities.

This year, the cost for Rowers will be $270.00.  That fee includes the cost of lodging at the facility in Summerton, 2 meals a day on site , fees for use of the facility, cost associated with driving the boats, launches and rowers to the site and back and appropriate drinks and snacks for a team in training.  This fee covers the expenses of the coaches during the week of training.  There will also be the opportunity for the team to participate in team building activities supervised by the trained staff at the RM Cooper Rowing Center.  This team building exercise will be on their Challenge Course.

Additionally, the club will need 8-10 rowers to accompany the boats to Summerton on 9 April.   Those rowers will incur an additional charge of $31.00 for the extra night in Summerton (for a total trip cost of $301.00) . The main body of the team will travel to Summerton on Monday,10 April.  The entire team will return to Chesapeake on Saturday, 15 April 2005.  Easter falls on 16 April this year.

Parents will be needed to drive the rowers to Summerton and act as chaperones for the team while they are in on location.  Costs for parent chaperones will be $249.00 per person (this cost may be adjusted downward depending on the accommodations available for the chaperones) .  Chaperones will be staying at the same facility as the rowers.   We also need parents to tow the boat trailer and the 2 launch trailers to Summerton.  If you are able to do this please contact Michael Baumann at 546-8292.

Sign ups for the trip are required no later than March 8, the night of the regularly scheduled parents’ meeting.  The first payment of $115 will  be due at that meeting.  There will be a special Spring Break Trip Meeting on March 22 at 7pm in Coach Stambaugh’s classroom (Room 719). Specific details about the trip will be provided at that time.  Standards of conduct for the rowers making the trip will be explained in detail at this meeting. This is a mandatory meeting for parents of rowers intending on going to South Carolina.  The rules of the R. M. Cooper Leadership Center are very specific concerning inappropriate behavior.  Parents and rowers need to be familiar with the policies of the club and the center before we head south.    The remaining balance for the trip will be due on March 22nd.

The  March deadlines are absolute. Reservations with R.M. Cooper 4-hLeadership Center must be finalized on 9 March and final arrangements must be made by 25 March.  No signups or late payments will be accepted after the established deadlines.

Parents are reminded that rowers should bring money to cover meals on the days the team is traveling to and from Summerton as well as spending money appropriate for the trip.  .

Any rowers or parents attending Spring Break Camp who have specific dietary requirements should contact the trip coordinator by  March 9 so that the caterer can be notified.

If you have any questions bring them to the meeting and they will be addressed.   Michael Baumann is the coordinator for Spring Break 2006.
